Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry

A clean, beautiful smile is something to be proud of.  When being introduced to someone, it is one of the most impressionable features one can have.  Having confidence in your smile is a boost to your self-esteem and can be likened to putting your best food forward.   It is quite common for those who are not comfortable with the appearance of their smile to appear self-conscious, cover their mouth, or smile less, seeming less happy.

Dr. Cooke enjoys helping his patients enhance and improve their smiles.  With his years of experience, he has encountered every dental situation you can imagine and developed the way to overcome them with outstanding results.  It is not uncommon for Dr. Cooke’s patients to tell him how their “new” smile changed their life and how much better they feel about themselves.

Dr. Cooke embraces the finest aspects of dental art and science.  His porcelain veneers are handcrafted and customized to fit each individual's unique smile.  The material Dr. Cooke uses to create a veneer is paper-thin but exceedingly strong when he bonds it to a tooth.  Dr. Cooke explains to patients that there are several types of veneers available and he can recommend which choice would be best for the patient’s mouth.

If a patient is advised to utilize a conservative approach to enhancing their smile, porcelain veneers are an excellent choice.  Dr. Cooke explains that in this process only a small amount of enamel is removed, compared to putting a crown on a tooth.  In examining the patient’s mouth and considering the options available, Dr. Cooke believes in clear co-discovery and a comprehensive discussion of all methods under consideration.

Since the patient’s bite is key to prolonging the life of any restoration and the comfort of the jaw, Dr. Cooke performs a very careful evaluation of this element.  Ensuring a proper chewing environment is critical to Dr. Cooke since he builds beauty to last!

Porcelain Crowns

When a tooth has undergone many, many years of large fillings or fractures, it may be recommended that a crown be placed on the tooth to best protect it.  This type of restoration is designed to guard the tooth from any further deterioration or complication.  It also gives the tooth a new, cosmetically pleasing look.

Crowns are made to attach to the entire top portion of the tooth.  Crowns benefit and protect the tooth from further cracking, which can lead to losing the tooth altogether.  There are various materials that can be used to fashion a crown and Dr. Cooke presents these different choices with thorough explanations to the patient.

There are many people who have had the silver-colored material placed in their teeth to address cavities.  Unfortunately, Dr. Cooke has found that this type of material has a tendency to expand and contract with temperature changes in the mouth.  It causes the exterior walls of the tooth to flex and cause damaging fractures that can do irreversible damage and lead to loss of the tooth.  By replacing that old material with newer style crown, Dr. Cooke feels it strengthens the compromised exterior walls of the tooth and results in a stronger and more protective environment for the tooth.

Dr. Cooke has been regarded for many years as one of Southern California’s top dental artists.  He is well known for creating perfectly-fitting crowns that look just like a real tooth.  He is also superior at color-matching crowns to blend in with the other existing teeth.  There is a great difference in the way various providers create crowns.  There are patients who have had a crown made by other providers in the past that looks opaque and flat; it obviously looks different from the real teeth.  Experience the best with Dr. Cooke!  He works closely with one of the finest and most artistic dental technicians in the United States to provide patients with the absolute perfect crown – in both comfort and appearance.

Those individuals who have had painful experiences in a dental chair and received a poor-fitting crown, painful installation, or a bad color-match should make a point to make an appointment with Dr. Cooke today.  Why not have a crown that fits smoothly like the original tooth, is very comfortable when chewing, and matches all the other teeth?  The difference is in the professional.  The excellence Dr. Cooke produces each and every day is why he is heralded at the top of his field.

As always, Dr. Cooke and his staff educate patients on proper home care and with regular visits to our hygienist, these high quality crowns last for many years.

Composites

When a tooth must be filled due to a cavity, composites are used with great results in both functional and basic ways.  Unfortunate things like chips, fractures, or cavities can occur on any tooth surface inside the mouth.  You can trust Dr. Cooke to use his innate artistic ability in blending composite for a prepared area and continually polishing it until it features the optimal, desired smooth and undetectable surface. His artistic and functional talent allows him to protect the tooth and do outstanding color-matching.

Patients get particularly concerned if they have a cavity appear on the front of a tooth, especially along a gum line, making it very apparent when they smile.  With excellent manual dexterity, Dr. Cooke gently removes the portion of soft, discolored enamel and artistically applies perfectly-colored composite material along the bottom of the tooth.  The outstanding result?  No one ever knows it was there at one time!  A great smile is saved and the patient is always immensely pleased.

Dr. Cooke explains that his technique is to place composite in extremely thin layers so that he can feather it perfectly into the tooth structure and thereby saving as much of the natural tooth as possible.  The high quality material that Dr. Cooke uses results in a smooth, strong, and conservative result.  As patients see over the years, Dr. Cooke’s work in his high-technology office allows him to rebuild teeth to full strength and beautiful appearance for the long term.  Experience the difference!

Excessive Gum Smiles

One of the first things examined at Dr. Cooke’s office is the patient’s gums.  Gums are the support for the teeth and provide a soft framework and esthetic enhancement.  If you look closely, you can see that gums surround the teeth in a scalloped fashion, with natural dips that expose both the front and back of each tooth.  There are some patients who have gums that sit very high above the teeth.  Other patients may have gums that are unusually thick and protrude in an unnatural way.

Dr. Cooke is able to use a method called gum contouring to help a patient who feels their smile looks "too gummy," meaning they feel that too much gum area shows when they smile.  Properly shaped and sized gums are important, Dr. Cooke says, as they are a factor for an overall healthy dental environment.

Dr. Cooke pays particular attention to a patient’s gum presence when they smile.  He is able to discuss techniques that are available and deliver excellent cosmetic result, with surprising comfort.  If you’ve ever wanted to enhance your smile and reduce that “gummy” aspect, Dr. Cooke is able to create a customized, more beautiful and balanced smile, given the latest technological advances he uses.
